| Sumario: | Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study. Objective: to assess energy drinks (ED) consumption pattern among first- and third-year undergraduate students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Rosario. Instrument: questionnaire with structured dichotomous and multiple-choice questions. Sample: 1217 surveys. Relative frequencies and averages were calculated with ± standard deviations, according to variable type. Statistical significance between proportions was considered if p<0.05 using Chi-Square tests. Results: average age was 24.87 years comprised by women (82%), men (17%), non-binary (1%). Consumption pattern: 77% had already consumed ED and 84% mixed them with alcohol. Significant differences in consumption according to gender were found (p=0.0008), 87% men versus 74% women. Average number of cans consumed per occasion: 1.79, SD 1.54; 32.7% consumed at least once in the last month. Consumption occasions included 49% at parties, bars, or clubs, and 8% for work/study purposes. Perceived effects: 46% did not feel any difference, 18% felt more energetic, 2.3% experienced tachycardia, insomnia, or increased happiness. Reasons for consumption: 11% to study more, 8.5% wanted to have fun all night and improve the taste of the drink; when mixed with alcohol, 34% sought to enhance the drink's flavor. Most used alcohol was vodka (35%); 38% felt no difference when mixing ED with alcohol. Impressions on the effects of ED consumption on their health: very harmful (41%) not harmful (28%). Conclusions: the majority consume ED, despite being students in health-related fields and recognizing that their use can have adverse effects on it. |
