| Sumario: | This paper deals with the history of "Route 2", the main Argentine tourist road connecting the city of Buenos Aires with the great national seaside resort of Mar del Plata. It is framed within the perspective of the history of transport and mobility, which understands infrastructures as active producers of territories, social relations and culture, and as mediators of social, economic, political and cultural life. The article focuses on three key moments in order to interweave infrastructure, automobile technology, territory, landscapes and the motorised tourist experience: the construction of the paved road in the late 1930s; the massification of tourism and automobile use and the road deficit between the 1960s and 1980s; and finally the transformation of the road into a privately managed and provincialised highway in the late twentieth century. |
