Sumario:This paper discusses the main features of the Argentine pension system in terms of the contributory/ non-contributory gap, focusing on the period 2003-2019 under governments with opposing political views. Firstly, the essay presents a brief historical overview on the Argentine pension system starting with the market friendly reform of the 90, followed by a discussion of the policies carried on by the Kirchnerist administration (2003-2015) and, subsequently, by Macri’s administration (2015-2019). Secondly, the article presents recent data on the evolution and sufficiency of pension benefits and inequalities among beneficiaries, depending on their access to contributory/non-contributory schemes. This evidence is used to discuss the continuities, contradictions, and structural weaknesses of the Argentine pension system during the period under analysis.
