Sumario:This work explores the use of the photographic image in the early years of the popular illustrated weekly Caras y Caretas, published between 1898 and 1939, in relation to content from the national historical past. It investigates the ways in which the articles discursively and visually treat individual figures such as San Martín or Rosas and their images, or events such as the conquest of the desert or Semana de Mayo (May Week), as well as other types of cultural stories, customs like the old carnivals. It thus covers the various strategies and modalities in the visual communicative practices of Caras y Caretas that move from the use of the image in a scientific documentary sense to the fictional recreation of historical events. Then it shows the cultural crossover between the appeal to the past and national identity, the modern material technology of halftone and the mass visual culture.
