description The objective of this work was to carry out an analysis of quantitative studies of health risks associated with substances present in water, in relation to their spatial representation, integration of different exposure scenarios and estimates of health risks in critical environmental areas. Different applications of the USEPA health risk assessment methodology, implemented in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, were analyzed. From the study, it was observed that these tools have important potential, beyond certain limitations. Spatialized risk assessments, by estimating risk based on exposure information distributed in space, allow a more complete and realistic overview to be offered. In addition, the combination of different exposure scenarios, such as residential and school scenarios, provides a more comprehensive view of health risks. In the case of the Matanza-Riachuelo river basin, risks associated with contaminants such as chromium and nitrate have been evaluated, which facilitates the prioritization of risks in critical contexts and contributes to informed decision-making.

El objetivo del trabajo fue realizar un análisis de estudios cuantitativos de riesgo a la salud asociados a sustancias presentes en el agua, con relación a su representación espacial, integración de distintos escenarios de exposición y estimaciones de riesgos a la salud en áreas ambientales críticas. Se analizaron diferentes aplicaciones de la metodología de evaluación de riesgos a la salud de USEPA, implementadas en la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. A partir de la realización del estudio se observó que estas herramientas presentan importantes potencialidades, más allá de ciertas limitaciones. Las evaluaciones de riesgo espacializadas, al estimar el riesgo basándose en información de exposición distribuida en el espacio, permiten ofrecer un panorama más completo y realista. Además, la combinación de diferentes escenarios de exposición, como los residenciales y escolares, brinda una visión más integral de los riesgos para la salud. En el caso de la cuenca del río Matanza-Riachuelo, se han evaluado riesgos asociados a contaminantes como cromo y nitrato, lo que facilita la priorización de riesgos en contextos críticos y contribuye a la toma de decisiones informadas.
