Sagmata stream experimental watershed: monitoring flashfloods in ephemeral streams of semiarid Patagonia (Chubut province, Argentina)

The occasional rains produce flash floods in the ephemeral streams and high turbidity pulses in the Chubut River, which may cut off the provision of fresh water to the communities and flo...

Sumario:Half of the population of the Chubut Province (Argentina) lives in the Lower Valley of the Chubut River (VIRCh). The occasional rains produce flash floods in the ephemeral streams and high turbidity pulses in the Chubut River, which may cut off the provision of fresh water to the communities and flood risk as well. In order to get field data on soil erosion and hydrological processes, the Sagmata Stream Experimental Basin (CEAS), a 129 km2 pilot basin, was instrumented in 2017. Results are presented for the period December-2017 to February-2022. The mean annual rainfall was 161 mm. Seasonal variations in precipitation and duration of storms are not significant. Three events with high 10 min- rainfall intensity were recorded: 42, 45, and 63 mm/h. During the period, 17 flood events have been registered, with a maximum flow discharged into the Chubut River of 34.6 m3/s. The average sediment concentration of the flow is 33.4 g/l with a maximum registered value of 60.6 g/l. The results constitute a contribution to the knowledge of regional hydrology as well as for the formulation of projects to guarantee water security in VIRCh.
