Sumario:The objective of this article is to identify which explanatory approach allows to characterize the conflict due to the contamination of the Santiago River in El Salto, Jalisco. The purpose is to specify the conceptual framework that underpins its understanding.  To this end, two explanatory approaches to environmental conflict are presented, the environmentalism of the poor and the conflict of environmental content. Then the case of the contamination of the Santiago River in the Salto is shown historically. The research involved an exhaustive search for information in the search engines of the UDG (University of Guadalajara), Google Scholar, CONRICYT, Scielo, Dialnet and the National Transparency Platform. About fifteen sources of information were located, which were disseminated under the following categories of analysis: "Río Santiago" AND "contamination", "Río Santiago" AND "El Salto", "El Salto" AND "environmental conflict". It was found that the problem reviewed here shares material elements that allow it to be characterized from both approaches.
