This fact placed the issue under consideration of both national political leadership and public opinion. The proposal of this paper is a description of the maritime area continental shelf to try some conceptual clarifications which will allow a clear understanding of the question. First, we describe the doctrinal evolution and rules on the continental shelf, both nationally and internationally and, in the final itmes, we refer to the work of the National Committee on the Outer Limits of the Continental Shelf who was in charge of the preparation of the Argentinian submission, the main aspects of the Recommendations of the Commission, and its legal implications for our country. El 11 de marzo de 2016 la Comisión de Limites de la Plataforma Continental aprobó sus Recomendaciones sobre la Presentación que Argentina había realizado en el año 2009 con miras a fundamentar la demarcación del límite exterior de la plataforma continental de todo el territorio nacional. Ante este hecho, que colocó al tema bajo la consideración de la dirigencia política y de la opinión pública nacionales, la propuesta de este trabajo es realizar una descripción del espacio marítimo de la plataforma continental a fin de intentar algunas precisiones conceptuales que permitan comprensión clara la cuestión. En los primeros apartados se presenta la evolución doctrinaria y normativa de la plataforma continental, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional para, en los apartados finales, hacer referencia a la labor de la Comisión Nacional del Límite Exterior de la Plataforma Continental (COPLA) a cuyo cargo estuvo la elaboración de la Presentación argentina, a los principales aspectos de las Recomendaciones de la Comisión, y a sus implicancias jurídicas para nuestro país.
