Beyond the content of the PESCO, which has been analysed in detail by scientific doctrine, it is important to figure out the implications that its activation will have for Spain as well as the effects that it will have on the relation between the EU and the Atlantic Alliance. To this end, it is necessary to examine some aspects of the current international context in which all these actors operate, clarifying the political-normative status of the European strategic autonomy and its categorization as a global power on the international arena. The study of the advantages and disadvantages for Spain of its participation in the PESCO provides elements for knowing, above all, the geopolitical position of our country and the consequences for the national defence industry. The link between the EU and NATO, which has recently been strengthened, does not prevent the EU from acquiring strategic autonomy.However, cooperation fields’ must be clearly identified. La Cooperación Estructurada Permanente es una herramienta útil para alcanzar la autonomía estratégica que tanto anhela la Unión Europea (UE) y que la convertiría en un actor global de las relaciones internacionales contemporáneas. Más allá del contenido de la PESCO, que ha sido analizado detalladamente por la doctrina científica, conviene descifrar las consecuencias que su activación tendrá para España, así como los efectos que se derivan para el vínculo entre la UE y la Alianza Atlántica. Paraello, es imprescindible examinar algunos rasos del contexto internacional actual en el que operan todos estos actores y, también, aclarar el estado político-normativo en el que se encuentra la autonomía estratégica de la UE y, desde ahí, su categorización como potencia global en la escena internacional. El estudio de las ventajas e inconvenientes para España de su participación en la PESCO proporciona elementos para conocer, sobre todo, la posición geopolítica de nuestro país y las consecuencias en la industria nacional de defensa. El vínculo con la OTAN, que se ha reforzado recientemente, no impide quela UE adquiera autonomía estratégica, aunque se deben señalar con precisión los sectores de la colaboración.
