Sumario:This research addresses the characteristics of participation in the state mechanisms of family farming at a subnational scale, in relation to the management model and state policies. We are interested in observing how participation is involved in each mechanism and how the management model is defined in conjunction with the analysis dimensions proposed: origin, objectives and functions of the mechanisms, regulatory and institutional framework, and the notion of family farming involved. To do this, we analyze the types of participation that characterize management models of two state agencies oriented to family farming: the Institute of Family Agriculture and Popular Economy (IAFEP, Province of Chaco), in which we focused on the Rural Services Consortiums, and the Provincial Institute of Comprehensive Action for Small Agricultural Producers (PAIPPA, Province of Formosa), focusing on Free Fairs. The exploratory research was designed following a qualitative methodological approach. We used primary sources (semi-structured interviews conducted online during April and May 2021) and secondary sources, mainly academic articles, press reports and official reports. Finally, we conclude that a management model brings together dissimilar intervention devices which may even disagree with the strict characterizations, and bring into question the category of participation itself.
