Upon this base the article analyzes aspects of the sanitary, economic and social emergency that the COVID-19 pandemic brings to the region and considers how the current and epic calamity acts as a catalyst for both the transformations that had been happening as a result of the establishment of the neoliberal project, as well as other emerging, unexpected and specific changes due to the pandemic situation. In this sense, the article recovers the content of the book while seeking to capture how the content of the 8 chapters compiled (by researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Ecuador) allow building a multidimensional and comparative view of social protection challenges, and give account of the substrate on which the pandemic operated, and the tensions that it enabled, as well. A partir de la reciente publicación del libro La disputa por el bienestar en América Latina en tiempos de asedio neoliberal (CLACSO-IIGG, 2020), en el que se presenta un diagnóstico plural de la difícil situación del bienestar social en América Latina y de la intensificación de las disputas políticas por su definición y concreción, el escrito analiza aspectos de la emergencia sanitaria, económica y social que significa la pandemia de COVID-19. Se plantea que la actual y épica calamidad, que se impuso en el mundo y en la región, actúa como un catalizador y acelerador tanto de las transformaciones que venían sucediendo a raíz de la instauración del proyecto neoliberal, como de otros procesos emergentes, inesperados y propios de la situación pandémica. En este sentido, el artículo recupera el contenido del libro a la vez que busca capturar cómo los 8 capítulos que integran la obra (de investigadores/as de Argentina, Brasil, Uruguay, Paraguay y Ecuador) permiten construir una mirada multidimensional y comparada del bienestar social, y dan cuenta del sustrato sobre el cual la pandemia operó, así como las tensiones que ésta habilitó.
