In this first part we have studied her career since 1903 to 1922. At the same time, we have analyzed her prose texts and verse written during those years, concluding that she expressed valuable educational ideas such as: (a) the importance that the teacher offers and prepares his/her lesson with beauty because for her, education was loveliness; and (b) inviting to value and recognize the incomparable place the educator takes as an example and a model for his/her students. El presente trabajo pretende mostrar que Gabriela Mistral fue una educadora a tiempo completo que asumió diversas funciones al servicio de la educación pública de Chile, desde las más sencillas —como ayudante “sin título”— hasta las de mayor responsabilidad, como directora de liceos femeninos. Para esta primera parte se ha historiado su trayectoria desde 1903 hasta 1922. A la par, hemos analizado algunos textos en prosa y verso escritos en esos años, constatando que expresó ideas educativas de gran provecho, tales como: (a) la importancia de que el educador ofrezca y prepare su lección con hermosura, porque para ella el objeto de la pedagogía es la belleza y (b) invitando a valorar y reconocer el insustituible lugar que tiene el educador como ejemplo y modelo de vida para sus estudiantes.
