This article analyzes the determinants associated with the evolution of monetary poverty in Argentina during the 2003-2010 and 2010-2019 periods. To approach this objective the RIF methodology of decomposition was applied to the data of the Permanent Poll of Households (Encuesta Permanente de Hogares) provided by INDEC. The resuslts show that the variation of the returns to the attributes of the homes is the most important effect for explaining the reduction of poverty in the first period and it’s rise in the second one. Furthermore, it was found that the demographic, educational and labor characteristics of the members of a household are the most relevant factors for explaining the evolution of the poverty rate. The presented evidence is novel and helps to comprehend the underlying causes for the changes in the lack of income in Argentina during the recent period. A pesar de las mejoras en el bienestar evidenciadas desde inicios de la década de los 2000, la pobreza en Argentina sigue siendo elevada y la preocupación por su erradicación ocupa el centro de la agenda económica y política del país. Este artículo analiza los determinantes asociados a la evolución de la pobreza monetaria en Argentina durante los periodos 2003-2010 y 2010-2019. Para abordar este objetivo se aplica la metodología de descomposiciones RIF a los datos de la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares provistos por el INDEC. Los resultados muestran que la modificación en los retornos a los atributos de los hogares es el efecto más importante para explicar la reducción de la pobreza en el primer periodo y la suba en el segundo periodo. Además, se encuentra que las características demográficas, educativas y laborales de los miembros del hogar son los factores más relevantes para explicar la evolución de la tasa de pobreza. La evidencia presentada es novedosa y realiza un aporte a la compresión de las causas subyacentes a los cambios en las carencias de ingresos en Argentina en el periodo reciente.
