Sumario:In a risky world, Argentina's defense policy represents a real mystery. While it has a modern structure and is backed by adequate regulations, its material means are three and four decades old or more, and in many cases, obsolete. A limited budget is invested almost totally in personnel, presenting an excessive number of officers in high ranks that increases personnel costs, and bureaucratic structures created to justify that officers. These factors determine the insufficiency of the funds destined to the training of the personnel and maintenance of the material, all that determines an almost total absence of operative capacity. The few significant acquisitions for the defense have been of very little relevance to the former. Meanwhile, the almost idyllic atmosphere of peace and cooperation prevailing in South America for nearly three decades, built with significant participation in Argentina's foreign and defense policies, is deteriorating rapidly, paradoxically due to current Argentine policies on the subject. The article analyzes in depth the situation and makes proposals to overcome it.
