Sumario:This essay reflects on the uses of history and the politics of memory, through meanings attributed to the trajectory of Manuel Belgrano. The late but successful assessment of his performance was linked to the historiographic operation carried out by Bartolomé Mitre in the context of the organization and consolidation of the National State. In his work, he gave relevance to the revolutionary leader’s political actions which were considered decisive, and Mitre linked them to the projection of an emancipatory destiny for the nation. In turn, the Centennial and Bicentennial commemorations of Belgarno’s death, constituted favorable junctures to link various aspects of the independence hero with current interpretations of the country’s destinies.
