| Sumario: | The 16th letter of the Heroides differs from the other letters because it is written by Paris and addressed to Helen. Through it, he tries to convince the addressee to run away together, betraying values of the Greco-Roman tradition such as hospitality and marriage. This article analyses the rhetorical-argumentative strategies employed by Paris and the conception of gender that underlies them, while analysing the context and Ovid's contribution to these two topics. In order to study the first aspect, we use the model of Functional Grammar and the data from the discursive levels: representational and interactive (Kroon, 1995). As for the gender dimension, Paris' discourse, the imaginary around Helena and the context in which the work is set are taken into account, paying special attention to the way in which stereotypes are blurred and reinforced in equal measure. |
