Sumario:The present contribution attempts to rescue the figure of the first naturalist of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, Don Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga, who carried out the first geological study of these domains in 1819. Larrañaga is well known as a Uruguayan hero, who participated from the reconquest of the city of Buenos Aires from the English invasions until the dawn of the revolution for freedom, having an outstanding participation in the young republic. He was the founder of the National Library and the first Public Museum, among other institutions. His scientific contributions are analyzed, especially the Geological memory on the formation of the Río de la Plata deduced from its fossil shells, which constitutes the first geological-stratigraphic study, supported by a precise analysis of the paleontological content of its marine deposits. His paleontological contributions had an impact on the perception of some of the great savants of the time.
