description During the late pre-Hispanic period, the Middle and Lower Parana region was characterized by the coexistence of different groups with economic strategies based on hunting, gathering, fishing, and horticulture. After the Spanish colonization, the installation of reductions destructured the lifestyle of native populations and in particular of those individuals who were incorporated to sustain such institutions. Food consumption was not immune to these changes, as evidenced by documentary sources. This paper examines the diet of individuals who lived in the Santiago del Baradero reduction (Buenos Aires province) through the analysis of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C, δ15N) stable isotopes and the comparison with the information obtained by other researchers for pre-Hispanic times. Based on this, isotopic measurements were made on the foods that could have been consumed in the reduction, according to the information contained in the documents of the Archivo General de Indias. The results indicate a greater dependence on foods characterized by a C4 photosynthetic pattern, similar to that of the pre-Hispanic horticulture groups, and a lower consumption of proteins towards the last years of their lives in some individuals.

Durante el periodo prehispánico tardío, la región del Paraná medio e inferior se caracterizó por la coexistencia de diferentes grupos con estrategias económicas basadas tanto en la caza, recolección y pesca como en la horticultura. A partir de la colonización española, la instalación de reducciones desestructuró los modos de vida de las poblaciones nativas y en particular de aquellos individuos que fueron incorporados para sostener tales instituciones. El consumo de alimentos no fue ajeno a estos cambios, tal como lo demuestran las fuentes documentales. En el presente trabajo se examina la dieta de individuos que vivieron en la reducción Santiago del Baradero (Provincia de Buenos Aires) a través del análisis de isótopos estables de carbono y nitrógeno (δ13C, δ15N) y la comparación con los datos relevados por otros investigadores para momentos prehispánicos. En función de ello se realizaron mediciones isotópicas sobre los alimentos que podrían haber sido consumidos en la reducción, según la información que refieren los documentos del Archivo General de Indias. Los resultados indican una mayor dependencia de alimentos caracterizados por un patrón fotosintético C4, similar a la de los grupos horticultores prehispánicos, y un menor consumo de proteínas hacia los últimos años de sus vidas, en algunos de los individuos. Durante o final do período pré-hispânico, a região do médio e baixo Paraná era caracterizada pela coexistência de diferentes grupos com estratégias econômicas baseadas na caça, coleta, pesca e horticultura. A partir da época da colonização espanhola, o estabelecimento de reducciones (assentamentos) desestruturou o modo de vida das populações nativas e, em particular, dos indivíduos que foram incorporados para sustentar essas instituições. O consumo de alimentos não ficou alheio a essas mudanças, como mostram as fontes documentais. Este artigo examina a dieta de indivíduos que viviam na redução de Santiago del Baradero (Província de Buenos Aires) por meio da análise de isótopos estáveis de carbono e nitrogênio (δ13C, δ15N) e da comparação com dados coletados por outros pesquisadores para a época pré-hispânica. Com base nisso, foram feitas medições isotópicas nos alimentos que poderiam ter sido consumidos durante a redução, de acordo com as informações contidas nos documentos do Archivo General de Indias.
