Sumario:This article analyzes the characteristics of the Salvadoran peasantry in the second half of the 20th century in order to understand why did they require an agrarian reform that would allow them to overcome their precarious legal relationship towards land. We seek to identify where they were located, what were the mechanisms to gain access to a parcel of land, what they cultivated, under what living and working conditions they carried out their work, and what were the problems that worsened by the end of the 1960s and forced the government to summon the First National Congress on Agrarian Reform.
