The aim of the present study was to integrate the role of self-regulatory failures in generating negative affectivity and the subsequent tendency to procrastinate. A secondary analysis of responses from 188 adults obtained from an open access dataset was done to model an effect of serial mediation. The relationship between the activation of the Behavioral Inhibition System and procrastination was serially mediated by depression and negative urgency. The results are discussed considering the sequence of events that start with self-regulation failures that produce increases in negative affectivity. These increases are not properly regulated and induce procrastinatory behaviors. Additionally, some theoretical aspects to implement intervention strategies to reduce procrastination are proposed.
