Sumario:The article aims to provide a broader approach to the processes of community organization and the actions of civil associations as modalities of health intervention decentralized from the State, in the mid-1950s and 1960s in Argentina. The documentary corpus is composed of the Revista Educador Sanitario, official publication of the Dirección de Educación Sanitaria y Social de la Nación during that period. Its analysis allows us to interpret the role assigned to health education as state knowledge, both in the management of the original neighborhood experiences in peri-urban areas, and in the renewed protagonism of civil associations advocating the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of chronic diseases. Although this situation has been associated with the “social welfare” policies promoted by the de facto government of Juan Carlos Onganía (1966-1970), the present hemerographic study corroborates its origins in previous national administrations.
