Sumario:In the field of the History of Medicine, the assistance of the sick was, from the beginning, linked to religious and philosophical mysticism. Health Temples, Valetudinarias, Xenodochia, Infirmaries, Nosocomia, Pesthouses and finally Hospitals emerged. The painful human-beings, devastated by wars, poverty, famine and epidemics, felt the influence of the political and social conditions of each period. This paper was inspired in a personal research originated in a trip to the Maltese Archipielgo, which made me revive the work of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John, also known as the Knights of Malta, from their origin in Jerusalem, through their stay in Rhodes up to their final settlement on the Maltese islands.
