Methods: This qualitative descriptive study used theoretical saturation sampling. The population consisted of young adults and adults aged between 20 and 40 years with overweight and obesity. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using ATLAS.ti software, version 24. Results: Four categories were identified: (1) Food selection process: narratives and factors influencing food choices; (2) Methods of food preparation: cooking habits and techniques; (3) Quantity of food consumed: priorities, portion sizes, and commonly consumed food; and (4) Contextual factors in diet and food consumption: limitations affecting eating habits, such as education, attitudes, and motivation. Participants typically chose foods based on personal preferences, prioritizing items high in fats, sugars, and refined carbohydrates, leading to unbalanced diets. Regarding preparation, frying was predominant due to its speed and taste. Additionally, economic, emotional, and availability factors influence the eating habits of individuals with overweight or obesity, who often consumed ultra-processed foods due to their low cost, while intake of fruits and vegetables is considerably lower. Conclusions: Eating habits of young adults and adults with overweight or obesity are influenced by personal preferences, lifestyle, and economic conditions. Tasty but unhealthy food - rich in fats and sugars, mainly fried - are prioritized. Cost and availability limit options, encouraging the consumption of ultra-processed products. Furthermore, a lack of nutritional knowledge contributes to unbalanced and calorie-dense excessive diets.

Introducción: El sobrepeso y la obesidad son el resultado de una acumulación excesiva de grasa corporal y están influenciados por hábitos alimentarios inadecuados, sedentarismo, factores genéticos, ambientales, sociales y estilo de vida. Objetivo: Analizar los hábitos alimentarios de jóvenes y adultos con sobrepeso y obesidad del Barrio Villa del Sur de Cali. Metodología: Estudio cualitativo, descriptivo, con muestreo por saturación teórica. La población estuvo conformada por jóvenes y adultos entre 20 y 40 años, con sobrepeso y obesidad. La información se recolectó mediante entrevista semiestructurada y analizada a través del software ATLAS. Ti. versión 24. Resultados: Se obtuvo un total de 4 categorías: (1) El proceso de selección de alimentos: Narrativas y factores que influyen en la elección de alimentos; (2) Métodos de preparación de alimentos: Hábitos y técnicas de cocción y preparación; (3) Cantidad de alimentos destinada al consumo: Prioridades, porciones y alimentos más comunes en la dieta y Factores contextuales en la alimentación y el consumo: (4) Limitaciones que impactan los hábitos alimentarios, como la educación, actitudes y motivación. Los participantes suelen elegir alimentos según sus preferencias, priorizando aquellos ricos en grasas, azúcares y carbohidratos refinados, lo que complica el mantenimiento de una dieta equilibrada. En cuanto a la preparación, predominan técnicas como la fritura, asociadas a su rapidez y sabor. Además, factores económicos, emocionales y de disponibilidad influyen en los hábitos alimentarios de personas con sobrepeso u obesidad, quienes tienden a consumir alimentos ultraprocesados por su bajo costo, mientras que el consumo de frutas y verduras es considerablemente menor. Conclusiones: Los hábitos alimentarios de jóvenes y adultos con sobrepeso u obesidad están influenciados por preferencias personales, estilo de vida y condiciones económicas. Se priorizan alimentos sabrosos, pero poco saludables, ricos en grasas y azúcares, preparados principalmente mediante fritura. El costo y la disponibilidad limitan las opciones, favoreciendo el consumo de productos ultraprocesados.
