Sumario:The process of population aging taking place worldwide and specially in Latin America makes it essential to pay attention to the needs presented by the elderly at this stage of their lives. The general objective of this work is to characterize the existence of care places for the elderly in the country, based on data from the National Census of Homes 2010 and the Federal Map of Care. From all registered institutions, 13% are for elderly people and from those, 71.6% are private institutions. There is uneven distribution regarding socio-demographic characteristics at national level; this generates a situation that may increase vulnerability of elderly people and interferes with the possibility of having an adequate quality of life.
