Sumario:The articles study social representations about public space in popular classes of the Gran Buenos Aires. Although investigations on public space often consider it in opposition to mercantilization, in popular neighbourhoods, the categories of public and private refer mostly to places of open access and to the household. At the same time, the representation of those spaces is related to memories of public policies, to housing trajectories and to local sociabilities. The article describes different symbolic operations that resolve the relations and tensions between public and private space. These representations have affinities with the neighbour’s trajectories, depending on access to urban soil by land occupation or by informal purchase. The research took as case a neighbourhood in Quilmes Town (La Matera), which is the result of a land occupation process. To describe the social representations of its inhabitant’s semi-structured interviews were made.
