This dissertation analyzes the traces of the relationship established between the museums and the archives, in their custody, as well as the "place" they occupy in the museum. The research resulting from this investigation is based on the general objective of conducting a survey of the archives existing in the national museum entities belonging to the Portuguese Museum Network. The achievement of the main and secondary objectives resulted from the construction of a methodological framework, which had as its methods the documentary investigation and the case study. The first method allowed reading, analysis and critical interpretation of research sources, and the second, allowed the examination of the sample consisting of 38 museum entities of the Portuguese Network of Museums circumscribed to the Greater Lisbon area (NUTS II). The results obtained by the data collection technique by applying a questionnaire survey, provided by 14 museums, allowed us to obtain qualitative and quantitative information that positioned the archives as having a “place” of importance in the development of museum`s activities and affirming museums as producers of knowledge, as well as enabling the future construction of a guide to the existing archives in museums.

El objetivo general de la investigación es realizar una encuesta de los archivos, definitivos o estructurados, existentes en entidades museológicas nacionales pertenecientes a la Red de Museos Portugueses. El logro de los objetivos principales y secundarios resultó de la construcción de un marco metodológico basado en la investigación documental y el estudio de casos. El primer método permitió la lectura, el análisis y la interpretación crítica de las fuentes de investigación, y el segundo permitió examinar la muestra que consta de 38 entidades museológicas de la Red Portuguesa de Museos circunscritos al área metropolitana de Lisboa (NUTS II). Los resultados obtenidos mediante la aplicación de una encuesta por cuestionario, respondida por 14 entidades museológicas, nos permitieron obtener información cualitativa y cuantitativa que posicionó a los archivos como un importante "lugar" en el desarrollo de actividades museológicas y la afirmación de los museos como productores de conocimiento, además de permitir la construcción futura de una guía de los archivos existentes en los museos. A investigação decorrente desta pesquisa assenta no objetivo geral de realizar um levantamento dos arquivos, definitivos ou estruturados, existentes nas entidades museológicas nacionais pertencentes à Rede Portuguesa de Museus. O alcance do objetivo principal e dos secundários decorreu da construção de um quadro metodológico, que teve como métodos a investigação documental e o estudo de caso. O primeiro método permitiu a leitura, a análise e a interpretação crítica das fontes de investigação, e o segundo possibilitou o exame da amostra constituída por 38 entidades museológicas da Rede Portuguesa de Museus circunscritas à área da Grande Lisboa (NUTS II). Os resultados obtidos pela aplicação de um inquérito por questionário, respondido por 14 entidades museológicas, permitiram-nos obter informações qualitativas e quantitativas que posicionaram os arquivos como tendo um “lugar” de importância no desenvolvimento das atividades museológicas e de afirmação dos museus como produtores de conhecimento, bem como possibilitar a futura construção de um guia dos arquivos existentes nos museus.
