| Sumario: | This dissertation analyzes the traces of the relationship established between the museums and the archives, in their custody, as well as the "place" they occupy in the museum. The research resulting from this investigation is based on the general objective of conducting a survey of the archives existing in the national museum entities belonging to the Portuguese Museum Network. The achievement of the main and secondary objectives resulted from the construction of a methodological framework, which had as its methods the documentary investigation and the case study. The first method allowed reading, analysis and critical interpretation of research sources, and the second, allowed the examination of the sample consisting of 38 museum entities of the Portuguese Network of Museums circumscribed to the Greater Lisbon area (NUTS II). The results obtained by the data collection technique by applying a questionnaire survey, provided by 14 museums, allowed us to obtain qualitative and quantitative information that positioned the archives as having a “place” of importance in the development of museum`s activities and affirming museums as producers of knowledge, as well as enabling the future construction of a guide to the existing archives in museums.
