| Sumario: | Usually considered as second-class material, the so-called newspaper clippings have been marginalized at the level of archival processing, even though their presence in the archives is uncontestable and particularly challenging for the archivists who organize and describe them. Here, I discuss the archival status of such documents, examining the logic of their accumulation in personal archives as a reflection of a social practice rooted in an ancient tradition. Then, I analyze the ways in which they are arranged and represented in finding aids, pointing out some theoretical and methodological consequences. Finally, I show how the crossing of concepts and notions from Archival Science, Diplomatics, and Communication and Language Studies converged to the study of the documents generically named as newspaper clippings, in benefit of arrangement and descriptive strategies based on the contexts of accumulation and the appropriate recognition of the documentary forms.
Keywords: Newspaper clippings, Documentary form, Special Diplomatics, Archival description.
