It is an impossibility, once the revolution is verified, to expect from a congress of enthusiasts, that they do not propel themselves beyond the limits of reason, and that, in their rage against abuses, they do not also destroy the perhaps innocent causes that produce them: just as it would be impossible to get a gang of madmen to pull up weeds from a field without pulling up the wheat. En una época en que el espíritu de libertad hace tantos progresos, y que el entusiasmo que le subsigue hace tantos estragos, debe todo buen ciudadano dedicar sus meditaciones a evitar una revolución, que los mismos abusos preparan, que el ejemplo de los demás pueblos anticipa, y que debe temerse mas que los males que padecemos, y tanto deseamos enmendar. Es un imposible, verificada la revolución, el pretender de un congreso de entusiastas, que no se propasen mas allá de los límites de la razón, y que arrebatados contra los abusos no destruyan también las causas tal vez inocentes que los producen: así como sería imposible el conseguir que una cuadrilla de locos arrancasen de un campo la zizaña sin arrancar el trigo.
