Sumario:Abstract: Discussions on the Master’s thesis of sociologist and black activist Marielle Franco, former dweller of Favela Maré, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, brought up from her daily experiences in urban ghettos in Brazil andfrom her struggle for the rights and citizenship of the ones who live in these urban agglomerations, exposing marks of slavery and racism in the XXI Century. In a unique journey in political and academic life, her reflections upon the creation (2008) and security strategies of the Pacifying Police Units (Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora Social - UPPS), which aimed at the control of black and impoverished white populations on the margin of city life, denounced existing racism - which resulted in her summary execution.
