| Sumario: | The article analyses the Triennial Catalogue of the newly constituted Jesuit Province of Paraguay written by Diego de Torres Bollo in 1614, focusing on the description of the temperaments and qualities of the members of the Order belonging to that province. These data are compared with other sources referring to biographies and other historical aspects that elucidate the meaning and function of the assessment made by the provincial. The 1614 Catalogue (and triennial catalogues in general) is not simply a formal record, but responds to the need for the Society of Jesus, present in a challenging missionary context, to be a living and healthy 'body' in the spiritual, psychic and somatic aspects, and as such capable of responding to the needs of the environment. To this end, the ideal of balancing the social and spiritual body of the Society must take into account the complexion, that is, the state of the physical bodies, a vision present in the Ignatians from the very beginning. |
