Concern for the safeguarding of codices and manuscripts from the early years of the New Spain, and the care devoted to the interpretation of prehispanic knowledge, such as that applied to understanding the calendar of ancient Mexico, are part of the critical work of some scholars of the Enlightenment, among whom Spanish and Mexican Jesuits stand out. Voces de la cultura de los antiguos mexicanos presentes en el Diccionario del Padre jesuita Esteban de Terreros y Pando, son la guía en este artículo para penetrar en horizontes poco frecuentados de la filología en la Ilustración. La preocupación por el resguardo de códices y manuscritos procedentes de los primeros años de la Nueva España, el desvelo en la interpretación de los saberes prehispánicos -como la aplicada en comprender el calendario del México antiguo-, son parte de la labor crítica de algunos eruditos de Las Luces, entre quienes destacan jesuitas españoles y mexicanos.
