| Sumario: | The evangelization process in the Philippines islands at the end of the XVI and the begging of the XVII was permeated by two fundamental elements, the unexpected situation that happened due to the encounter with America and the centrality of language. On one hand, the American experience gave tools and useful guides that made easier the religious conversion, on the other, said experience led to the conclusion that if they want to carry on the process in a correct way they need to give language and translation a central role. This paper searches to look at how said relationship between the American and Philippines cases were established, and via the translation of Ave María in three indigenous languages of Philippines how Jesuits perceived the translations. |
