| Sumario: | Alonso de Barzana was one of the first Jesuit missionaries in the Spanish West Indies. His inspiration was St Francis Xavier, which led him to become a Francis Xavier of Latin America, in the words of one of his contemporaries, both in personal holiness and apostolic zeal. He travelled through much missionary territory (Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay) and learned 11 native languages, of which he left linguistic and catechetical tools. |
