description In this article, we will analyze the letters of four Italian missionaries who worked in the first decades of the mission in Paraguay: Simone Mascetta, Giuseppe Cataldini, Adriano Formoso and Pietro Commentali. In following the stories of these first envoys on mission in the new Province, we will investigate how, little by little, this territory would integrate the missionary horizon of the Society. In a first moment, we will analyse the "Indians" as object of the missionary desire of the four Jesuits in their letters indipetae. Later, the reading of other type of letters, written by them once they arrived at their destination and accounts of their experiences, will allow us to see how the Province of Paraguay, from an object of desire, became a space of presence and missionary action, until their death. Finally, the analysis of the triennial catalogues of the province will allow understanding the placement of the four missionaries, according to labels and demands proper to the universe of the vocational company to which they belong.
