Biodiversity Genetic Resources Genetic Information Digital Sequence Information International negotiations Biodiversidad Recursos Genéticos Información Genética Información de Secuencias Negociaciones internacionales The definition, scope and regulation of genetic information at the international level are one of the most controversial issues in the current international environmental negotiations due to its direct consequences on the conditions of sustainable development. International negotiations are in a kind of political lock caused by divergent positions between developed and developing countries. This article is intended to describe genetic information as an object of study, the state of the international debate and some systemic effects of this discussion on some fundamentals of the contemporary international law, such as the principle of national sovereignty over natural resources. The current debate on access, control and benefit-sharing arising from the use of genetic information presents a situation in which the balance between sovereignty and privatization of natural resources is once again in tension La definición, alcance y regulación de la información genética a nivel internacional constituye uno de los temas más controvertidos en las actuales negociaciones ambientales internacionales por sus consecuencias directas en las condiciones del desarrollo sustentable. Las negociaciones internacionales se encuentran en una suerte de bloqueo político protagonizada por la divergencia de posiciones entre países desarrollados y países en desarrollo. Este artículo tiene el propósito de describir el objeto de estudio, el estado del debate internacional y el efecto sistémico que proyecta sobre algunos fundamentos del derecho internacional contemporáneo, tales como la soberanía nacional sobre los recursos naturales. El debate actual sobre el acceso, control y distribución de beneficios derivados del uso de la información genética presenta una situación en la que el equilibrio entre soberanía y privatización de los recursos naturales entra nuevamente en tensión, sin conocerse el resultado final del proceso.
