Sumario:La evaluation of spermatic niorphology is of importance due to its pronostie value in potential male fertilitv, both in natural and in assisted reproduction. In the present vork, the morphologic profi]e of sarnples of semen froni no¡ mal and dispertiiie patients vas determmccl, in order to establish a correlation hetween structurc' and function. Samples were ohtainecl from male panriers of infertile couples vho attende aiidrologic consultation. The srnears verc stained hv time Papanicolaou tccbniqume, aoci the entena of the OMS and the reccnt muodification of Kruger ver foli owed to evali iatc spernatic morphologv. Of all the patients studied (n 46), 35 % wc're normospermics (A), 39 asthcnospermics, 7 o) oligospt'r-mies, 2 % terastospermics and 17 prcsented conibined alterations. Tlie average pc'rcentage of normal spermatozv \vas of 23.7 ± 1.23 jo the whole population. Whcn group A patients were coml)arecl whith astlienospermnics, ignificant. differences vere found in the perceiittge of sperrnatozoa with iniddl piccí» and tail altem-ations, in the las group (p < 002). Similar!y, whcn san'pIes a,cre analvsed according to th' prcsence of alterar iOflS: nono (A) , ene (B) tvo or more (C), it vas observed that time perc-eutage of normal forms dec'rcased in the groups in that orcicr ( A B < C): (A or B vs C p <0.05). The percentage of tapering spermatozoa Y%?¡-ts significantly higher in group C(p<0.OlvsAorB). Fm-orn the aboye results, it appears that 1) the larger number of functional a]tcm-aticnms is related to a higher percentagc of structural anonmalies. aud 2) the deficiciit motility in the asthenospermie group, is associateci to the midclIc picce and tail alterations.
