| Sumario: | Upper gastrointestinal bleeding -UGBas a complication, is well studied atintensive care units (l('IJ). but is lcss known in non ICU settings. Objectives To determine incidence and risk factorsof this cntity at clitiical itospitalization. Materials and Methods: A case-control study of patients with gastric ulcer discasediagnosecl by cndoscopy who presented with melena and hematemesis. Ten controls were taken for each case, matching sex, age and propliyltxis for gastric hemorrhage. Dcmographic data and othcr know risks factors were analyzed. Result: We found ten blecding case among 35070 discharges (incidence: 2.8/10000 clischargcs). Mortality vas not increased but the numnber of transfusion was higher in the bleecling group. Wc found an assocciation hetwen tJGB and systemic inflaniatory response synclrome -SIRS- (OR: 9.22 IC 95% 2.98-28.17) and diabetes (OR: 7.8 IC 95% 2.3-268). The resi of the factors studicd did not rich a statistical significance. Conclusions: UGB (lo ring clinical hospitalization is a rare coniplication that requires al] increased staying at hospital and a great numher of transfusions. It may be probably associated in a positive way with diabetes and SIRS. |
