| Sumario: | Gastrointestinal strornal tumors (GISTs) constitute the largest category of primary noncpithelial neoplasms of the stomach ancl small bowel. They represent about 1-2% from all neoplasrns of the digestive tract. They occur most commonly in the stomach and small bowel, but small series of comparable tumors havc also been reported in all the other parts of the tubular gastrointestinal tract, inclucling esophagus. colon, rectum and amis. They can also involve omcntum, mesentery, uterus, retroperitoneum. mesocolon and soft tissucs. Originally recognized ¡u 1960 by Martin ct. al. as a clist.inctive type of stromal neoplasm of the bowel, they were subsequently reported by Stout. vlio introduced the term leiomyoblastorna. Because of difficulties ¡u accurately predicting the biologic behavior of these tuniors, the terrn "smooth muscle tumor of uncertain nialignant potential" (SMT- !JMP) has heen introduced for borderline tumors. In 1983. Mazur and Clark comed the terrn gastrointestinal stronial tumor and suggested that these neoplasias might arise from (he inyenteric nervous system. Sorne studies have reported evidence of neuronal cell clifferentiation ¡o a proportion of GISTs and the terrn 'gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumor (GANT) has been introduced. Kindblorn et al are providing cogeni arguments to suggcst that GISTs show difíerentiation toward ¡nterstitiat Cajal celis (pacemaker celis of the gastrointestinal tracl). lnmnunohistochemically the GISTs often reveal lnmunoreactivity for vimentin. CD34 and CD! 17. Tlie airn of this paper is to perforrim and analysis of the historie evolution ami conceptual of the GISTs |
