La Medicina Interna ha gozado desde siempre un lugar especial dentro de las especialidades del arte de curar; la visión holística con que distinguió su accionar frente al problema médico, tanto en su vertiente fisiopatogénica como en la significación que este impacto producía en su entorno psico social, permitió al médico “clínico” o “internista”, ubicarse de una manera privilegiada ante alguien que, afectado por una enfermedad multisistémica no encontraba un horizonte claro. Así colegas o los propios pacientes, acudían al clínico que con su anamnesis, observación, examen completo rutinario, tiempo de reflexión, estudio y una metodología basada en la lógica de la agrupación sindrómica, organizaba u ordenaba lo que parecía caótico, favoreciendo a través de este ordenamiento, a veces encontrar el diagnóstico u otras el camino para desembocar en el mismo. Este médico además, estaba capacitado para conducir enfermedades prevalentes o acompañar en el crecimiento de una persona; escuchaba la angustia que desbordaba al enfermo, contenía a la familia jaqueada ante el dolor del ser querido, era un experto en la comunicación con la persona y en ello radicaba su empatía; así fue distinguido como el “médico de cabecera” y aunque cosechó en este sentido honores de los más variados, no fue nunca protegido por el sistema (entiéndase gobierno, instituciones u obras sociales) y muchas veces los propios pacientes en su retribución. Así se forjó la idea del hombre estudioso, entregado con irrenunciable abnegación, que podía estar siempre a disposición de cualquier avatar aún a costa de sus afectos primarios, aceptándose que eso era lo correcto desde la perspectiva de servir como mandato primordial de nuestra profesión...
