Three aspects were studied: the importance given to outreach within the set of activities carried out by university professors; whether university management expects professors to perform outreach activities, according to the informants’ opinion; and how often professors carry out these tasks. So as to provide some context, a brief historical overview of university outreach is presented, as well as changes in its patterns of actions. Some proposals are presented to improve outreach visibility. En este artículo se presentan algunos resultados referidos a las actividades de extensión universitaria según la opinión de más de 800 docentes universitarios encuestados en una investigación que también indagó otros aspectos del papel del docente universitario. Se estudiaron tres aspectos: la importancia otorgada a la extensión dentro del conjunto de actividades que realizan estos docentes; si las universidades esperan que los docentes hagan extensión, según la opinión de los encuestados; y con qué frecuencia les parece que los docentes hacen extensión. A fin de contextualizar la función de la extensión, se presenta un breve recorrido histórico de su incorporación en la universidad, así como los cambios del concepto según los diferentes modelos de acción.
