Correlation analysis between morphometric variables of the lower third molar and mandibular measurements obtained from panoramic X-rays

Sumario:Objectives: To determine the correlation between lower third molar measurements and mandible measures. Methods: In this descriptive study were analyzed the following lower third molar diameters and lengths: occlusal-apical length (oal), buccal-occlusal-cervical length (bocl), lingual-occlusal-cervical length (locl), mesial-distal diameter (mdd) and buccal-lingual diameter (bld). On the other hand, the mandible measures, obtained from digital panoramic X-rays images (n=26) using software applications, included: mandible's ramus height (rh), width (rw) and length (rl), body's length (bl) and condyle's length (cl). For the statistical analysis of these variables, mean and SEM were calculated for each of them and tested for correlation using Pearson's test (p<0.05). Results: Mandible measures (mm) obtained were: rh= 61.4±1.7, rw= 37.8±1.9, rl= 44.1±1.5, bl= 113.6±2.3, cl= 22.7±0.6, while the third molar morphometric measures (mm) were: oal= 17.9±0.3, bocl= 7.6±0.1, locl= 6.6±0.1, mdd= 11.1±0.2 and bld= 9.9±0.1. Univariate significant correlations were observed between rw and bld (r=0.64), rh and oal (r= 0.76), bl and mdd (r=0.57). Cross-wise measures of the mandible and molar tend to correlate with each other as also observed for the length-wise measures.  Conclusions: The correlation found between third molar morphometry and mandible's measures would be useful to estimate third molar morphometrics from panoramic X-ray. This would help plan the surgical removal of the molar.
