Sumario:The study of social and political aspects of the populations that occupied the Argentine Northwest during the Regional Development Period has attracted considerable attention in recent years (Cremonte 1992; Nielsen 1988, 1989, 1992; Palma 1993; Raffino 1988; Tarragó 1987). . These works present several points of contact with the theoretical approaches supported by those who have investigated the nature of the societies that precede the state in other countries - notably the United States - during the last three decades, since the publication of the seminal works by Service ( 1962, 1984 [1975]) and Fried (1967) on cultural evolution.
