Sumario:Open data policies and practices increase government transparency, enhancecitizens’ right to Access to public information and is the key to create public value. In this context, libraries play an important role promoting and supporting this movement. In addition, more and more of them are publishing their own data sets in web portals. However, historical statistics are not always published and raw data is not always accessible. The idea to over come this obstacle is based on searching, gathering and sharing data about Argentinian libraries between the mid-19th to the 20th century. The objective of this article is to describe an experience in opening this kindof data that was collected in the census. First, census were revised to identify and select library datasets. Then, each of them was prepared to be released in an open format following international best practices. In a short time, the complete results of this process will be available in Figshare. The ultímate go a list o continue this line of research by adding more datasets to show the development of libraries and their importance in the building of the nation.
