Sumario:The actions of 62 first-year Engineering students when solving a problematic situation were analyzed with a qualitative-quantitative approach. This problematic situation was designed in order to infer the frame of reference from which the observation is made by analyzing the interactions related to the perceived effect. The resolutions were interpreted to obtain information from the internal representations that support them. They reveal the ideas and cognitive resources of students when facing a problematic situation. The results of the analysis show that a considerable number of students make the frame of reference from which they solve explicit. The student´s answers were correct but incomplete as they show the application of heuristic principles. Likewise, it is observed that the incorporation of the problematic situation formulated in a different way from those that traditionally appear in textbooks or classroom practices proved to be a didactic resource that allows students to extend their way of approaching the resolution.
