The first particle detection system consisted of a plastic scintillator bar with 6x6 mm2 silicon photomultipliers. The second system consisted of a plastic scintillator bar with one 3x3 mm2 silicon photomultiplier, and a wavelength shifter fiber within the scintillator bar. The comparison between both systems favors the second design option, which have a better particle detection efficiency. The methodology presented in this article can be applied on the teaching of particle physics. En este artículo se presenta una descripción detallada de la construcción de un sistema básico de detección de partículas. Esta construcción podrá ser replicada en diferentes instituciones de educación universitaria o media. Además, se presenta una comparación entre dos diseños de sistemas de detección de partículas usando como material de detección el centellador plástico. El primer sistema de detección consiste de una barra plástica centelladora con dos fotomultiplicadores de silicio, cada uno con área de 6x6 mm2. El segundo sistema de detección consiste de una barra plástica centelladora, un fotomultiplicador de silicio con área de 3x3 mm2, y una fibra óptica de corrimiento de longitud de onda ubicada dentro de la barra centelladora. La comparación entre los dos sistemas de detección favorece la segunda opción de diseño, que muestra más eficiencia en la detección de las partículas. La metodología descrita en este artículo puede ser aplicada en la enseñanza de la física de detectores de partículas elementales.
