In addition to organising social and recreational events in the neighbourhoods where they were located, at least twenty clubs sponsored popular libraries around 1945. In this sense, these sports associations demonstratethe confluences between “physical culture” and “intellectual culture”. This article aims to explore these confluences and some of the challenges associated with popular libraries’ organization. The itinerary of Ateneo Popular club, founded in 1915 to play in the football league and which, at the same time, sponsored a library in line with the ideological current of Georgism, will allow us toanalyse this confluence. In particular, some challenges linked to the day-to-day running of Ateneo’s library, will be detected. Such challenges were shared by libraries founded in other La Plata’s clubs and were linked to the provision of a physical space, the bibliographic needs of the readership and the access to state support at national and provincial level. Fenómenos como la expansión urbana, el ascenso demográfico y la popularización del fútbol, derivaron en un apogeo de clubes deportivos en la capital bonaerense durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Además de patrocinar eventos sociales y lúdicos en los barrios donde se emplazaban, al menos veinte clubes auspiciaban bibliotecas populares hacia 1945. En tal sentido,estas asociaciones deportivas fueron escenarios de confluencias entre la “cultura física” y la “cultura intelectual”, cuyos alcances y desafíos procura aproximar este artículo. El itinerario del club Ateneo Popular, fundado en 1915 para disputar en la liga de fútbol y que en paralelo auspició una biblioteca afín a la corriente ideológica del georgismo, permitirá analizar con detenimiento tal confluencia. En particular, se detectarán algunos desafíos vinculados al funcionamiento cotidiano de esa sala, que distaron de ser exclusivos de su trayectoria. Como probarán los casos de bibliotecas auspiciadas por otros clubes de la ciudad, esos desafíos comunes estuvieron vinculados a la disposición de un espacio físico, a satisfacer las necesidades bibliográficas del público lector y a acceder al fomento estatal en el nivel nacional y provincial.
