The paper argues that this appreciations are especially revealing of how the elite social distinction practices might attempt against it social legitimacy by confront it with the criteria that, according with formulations also elaborated and diffused in this period, must define a respectable life. Therefore, such appreciations result a relevant dimension to think the margins and limits that the mobile social stage of the turn of the century Buenos Aires imposed to the elite to retain its central place in a social and cultural dimension before the advance of the modernization. El artículo analiza el estilo de vida del alto mundo social porteño en el cambio del siglo XIX al XX (aficiones, consumos, prácticas), los juicios que sobre él se trazaron en los principales medios de prensa de la ciudad y la imagen pública que en consecuencia se delineó de la elite y de su vida social. El argumento del trabajo es que dichas apreciaciones son especialmente reveladoras de cómo las prácticas de distinción social de la elite podían atentar contra su legitimidad social al enfrentarla con los criterios que, de acuerdo a formulaciones también elaboradas y difundidas durante este período, debían definir a una vida respetable. En consecuencia, resultan una dimensión relevante para pensar los márgenes y los límites que el móvil escenario social de la Buenos Aires del cambio de siglo impuso a su elite para retener en una dimensión social y cultural su lugar medular en la sociedad ante el avance de la modernización.
