| Sumario: | The article analyses the life style of the porteño high society in the turn of the XIX to XX century (affections, consumptions, practices), the judgments made about it in the principals media press of the city, and the public image consequently done of the elite and it social life. The paper argues that this appreciations are especially revealing of how the elite social distinction practices might attempt against it social legitimacy by confront it with the criteria that, according with formulations also elaborated and diffused in this period, must define a respectable life. Therefore, such appreciations result a relevant dimension to think the margins and limits that the mobile social stage of the turn of the century Buenos Aires imposed to the elite to retain its central place in a social and cultural dimension before the advance of the modernization. |
