Sumario:The various types of heritage urbanism that can be found in Latin American historic areas were identified by Jorge Enrique Hardoy (Hardoy, Dos Santos, 1983) in four categories: the historic city, the historic town, the historic center and the historic complexes. The historic center was understood only as those historical areas that today have urban centrality and belong to important settlements. At the same time, the Washington Charter (ICOMOS, 1987) highlighted the importance of “…historical urban areas, large or small cities, and historic centers or neighborhoods with their natural or man-made environment, which in addition to "Its qualityas a historical document is the expression of the values of traditional urban civilizations." Consequently, the cultural value of the central areas of numerous cities in Latin America generates the need to develop specialized documentation that supports the intentions of any intervention, as for example in the case of La Antigua Guatemala and its villages, which as a cultural site has special importance for its historical, cultural, social and landscape values, recognized nationally and internationally. The theoretical approach from Human Geography proposed in the work of Milton Santos presents another look at the historical patterns of land use, which allows guiding and substantiating sustainable urban and territorial planning for a site of cultural value.
